The Thermal Dynamics THD9-8213 is a start cartridge for the SL60 torch.

The start cartridge is the component that makes a modern plasma torch work, and it is worth explaining because it is the least understood part in the stack.

A plasma arc has to be started somehow. Older torches used high frequency — a burst of RF energy to ionise the gap and let the arc jump. That works and it has a real cost: high frequency is electrical noise, and it interferes with everything nearby. CNC controls, computers, and instrumentation all suffer, which is why HF-start plasma and modern automation are an awkward pair.

A start cartridge is the alternative. It contains the mechanism that establishes the pilot arc mechanically — the electrode makes contact and separates, drawing the arc — so no RF is generated at all.

That makes it a wear item rather than a fixed part of the torch. It has a moving element, it operates every single time the trigger is pulled, and it eventually stops starting reliably.

The symptom is worth knowing: a torch that starts intermittently, or takes several attempts, is usually a worn start cartridge rather than a gas or power problem. Everyone replaces tips and electrodes first.
