The FyterTech NPSU1PH100 is an NPS Essentials 15 x 18 inch universal single-ply sorbent pad, heavy weight, grey, single-ply meltblown polypropylene, 18 gallon absorbency, 100 pads.

Universal is the specification and grey is how you recognise it, across this whole range: white is oil only, grey is universal.

The difference is chemical rather than a grade. Polypropylene is naturally hydrophobic — it repels water. Oil only sorbents use it untreated, which is what lets them float on water and take the hydrocarbon while leaving the water behind. Universal sorbents are treated so the material accepts water-based liquids as well as oils.

That makes universal the choice when the liquid could be anything: coolant, solvent, water, oil, or an unknown. It is the sensible general-purpose stock for a workshop floor.

What it costs is the water rejection. A universal pad outdoors fills with rain. On a water surface it saturates and sinks. For marine work and anything exposed to weather, oil only is the correct product and universal is actively wrong.

Heavy weight means more material per pad and a tougher pad — for real spills rather than drip duty.

Meltblown construction gives fine fibres and a capillary network that draws and holds liquid.

Saturated sorbents are hazardous waste and go to disposal accordingly.
