Oil only is the specification and it depends on a property that is easy to state and easy to miss: this material is hydrophobic. It repels water and absorbs hydrocarbons.

That is what makes a marine boom possible. Dropped on water, an oil only boom floats — it does not take on water, it does not sink, and it selectively picks up the oil while leaving the water behind. A universal sorbent in the same situation absorbs water until it is saturated and useless, then sinks, taking the problem to the bottom.

So the white and grey colour convention across this range is functional rather than decorative. White is oil only, grey is universal, and using the wrong one on water is not a small mistake.
