Description
The Tweco TWE1230-1220 is a 23 nozzle, 5/8 inch tip bore, 3.219 inch tip length, 1/8 to 5/32 inch tip recess.
Tip recess is the specification here and it is the one that separates welders who understand their gun from welders who do not.
Recess is how far the contact tip sits back inside the nozzle. It is adjustable on most guns, and it changes the weld.
A recessed tip means the nozzle extends past the tip, which puts more nozzle between the arc and the atmosphere. That is better gas coverage, and it is what spray transfer and high amperage need — a big hot puddle wants the shielding column extended over it.
A flush or extended tip means the tip reaches the nozzle's end or past it. That is worse coverage and it buys access and visibility: the welder can see the joint, and the tip can get into a corner the nozzle cannot.
So the setting follows the job, and the stated 1/8 to 5/32 inch range is the recess this nozzle produces.
Getting it wrong produces problems that get misdiagnosed. Too little recess is porosity blamed on gas. Too much is a nozzle that cannot reach and spatter buildup blamed on the wire.
Verify the gun series. Nozzles, diffusers, and tips are a matched system.
