Tweco TWE1220-1206 Nozzle VelocityTM 3/8 Inch

The Tweco TWE1220-1206 is a Velocity nozzle, 3/8 inch tip bore.

At 3/8 inch this is a small bore, and small bores exist for a reason that is entirely about access.

The physics says a bigger bore shields a bigger puddle. The job frequently says there is no room for a bigger nozzle. Welding into a tight fillet, a narrow groove, a corner, or between two close members means the nozzle has to fit — and a 3/4 inch nozzle that cannot reach the joint shields nothing at all.

So a small bore is a compromise made deliberately: less gas coverage, in exchange for being able to reach the weld.

It also uses less gas, which over a production shift is real money and rarely counted.

The limit is honest. A small nozzle on a high-amperage weld with a large puddle will produce porosity, because the shielding does not cover the molten metal. Anyone running a small nozzle because it fits should keep the amperage and the puddle within what it can cover.

Nozzles are consumables. Spatter builds up inside the bore, and a bore constricted with spatter disturbs the gas flow — which is porosity again, blamed on technique. Clean it or change it.
