S-Line SLI20-EE2-9802X6 Eye-to-Eye Sling

The S-Line SLI20-EE2-9802X6 is an eye-to-eye sling, 2 inch x 6 ft, shrink-wrapped, bulk, 2 ply, 2 inch wide, 9,800 lb webbing. Rated choker 5,000 lbs, vertical 6,400 lbs, basket 12,800 lbs.

Web slings must be inspected before every use, and the criteria are worth knowing because a sling gives no warning.

What removes a sling from service: any cut or tear in the webbing edge, any hole or snag, abrasion that has worn the surface, broken or worn stitching in the eyes, knots of any kind, acid or caustic burns, melting or charring, distorted or damaged fittings, and a missing or illegible tag.

Note what is not on that list: how it looks generally. A sling can be filthy and sound, and it can look serviceable with a cut edge that will part under load. The inspection is specific, and it is done by hand along the whole length rather than by glancing at it hanging on a rack.

The reason it matters so much is that synthetic webbing does not fail gracefully. Wire rope broadcasts its condition — broken wires stick out and snag a hand. A web sling with compromised fibres looks like a web sling right up until it releases the load.

At 6 ft this is a general working length.

Never knot a sling. A knot is a permanent removal from service.
