The Relton REL05G-TCO14 is TCO-14 thread cutting oil, dark, with extreme pressure additive, 5 gallon pail.

At 5 gallons this is the volume container, and it identifies a shop threading continuously — pipe threading machines, production tapping, or a fabrication operation refilling reservoirs rather than a bench topping up a squeeze bottle.

The dark designation is the specification and it means sulphurised. Sulphur is the extreme pressure additive: under the heat and pressure at the cutting edge it reacts with the steel to form a sulphide film, a sacrificial layer that stops the chip pressure-welding itself to the tool. That reaction is what makes dark oil the standard for tough threading in steel.

It is also the limitation, and at 5 gallon volumes it matters more because the oil ends up everywhere. Sulphur attacks copper, brass, and bronze — it stains and corrodes them. A shop running dark oil through a threading machine and then putting brass fittings on the same bench is creating a problem it will not connect to the cause. Non-active light oils exist for non-ferrous work.

Threading is the hardest job a fluid does: full tool contact, nowhere for chips to go, and a brittle tap.
