Air tool oil exists because compressed air is hostile to everything inside a tool, and using the wrong oil accelerates the damage.

Compressed air carries water. Compressing air raises its temperature and its moisture concentration, and the moment it expands through a tool it cools and that water condenses — inside the motor. So an air tool's lubricant is permanently in the presence of water, at temperature, with air blowing through it.

That is why oxidation stability is the specification. Oil oxidises in the presence of air, heat, and water, and oxidised oil forms varnish and sludge. In an air motor, varnish glues the vanes into their slots, and a rotary tool with stuck vanes loses power and eventually stops. The tool gets stripped and blamed.

An oil formulated for the job resists that and displaces the water rather than emulsifying with it.

The other rule: motor oil is not air tool oil. It is too heavy, it contains detergents that hold water in suspension rather than shedding it, and it gums the motor.

The 1 gallon size suits a shop with a lubricator on the line rather than a bottle in a drawer.
