The Magnaflux MGX01173269 is #2 Yellow non-fluorescent magnetic powder, 10 lb pail, a fine dry powder, pale yellow in visible light, SAE sensitivity greater than 8.

Colour is the specification distinguishing this from the gray powder alongside it, and on a magnetic particle powder colour is purely functional. The indication is read by eye against the part surface, so the powder must contrast with whatever it is dusted onto. Gray disappears on light-coloured or freshly machined steel. Yellow does not disappear on much of anything, which is why it exists.

The SAE sensitivity figure greater than 8 is a real and useful number. It comes from a standardised test using a tool steel ring with drilled holes at known depths — the sensitivity rating is how many of those holes the material reveals. It is the only objective way to compare one particle product against another, and a figure above 8 is a strong result.

Dry powder method suits rough surfaces, hot parts, and subsurface flaws. Wet suspensions are more sensitive to fine surface cracks.

The method requires ferromagnetic material — steel and iron only. Aluminium and austenitic stainless need dye penetrant.
