The Magnaflux MGX01171669 is #1 Gray non-fluorescent magnetic powder, 10 lb pail, a fine dry powder, white-gray in visible light, 80 micron mean particle size.

Dry powder is the specification and it defines a different method from the wet suspensions in this range.

Dry magnetic particle inspection blows or dusts powder onto a magnetised part. Because the particles are dry and mobile in air, they respond to weaker and deeper leakage fields than a wet suspension does — which makes the dry method better at finding subsurface flaws rather than just surface-breaking ones. It also works on hot parts and rough surfaces, where a wet suspension would boil off or simply pool in the texture.

The trade is sensitivity to very fine surface cracks, where the wet method wins.

The 80 micron mean particle size is the number that governs it. Particle size is a direct trade: fine particles respond to weak fields and find small flaws, coarse particles are mobile and find deep ones. Eighty microns is a general-purpose figure.

Gray is a contrast choice. Magnetic particle indications are read by eye, and the powder has to show against the part. Gray reads on darker surfaces where black would vanish.

The whole method requires ferromagnetic material. Aluminium and austenitic stainless need penetrant instead.

Applications include weld inspection, castings, forgings, and structural inspection.
