The word "safety" in a compressed air gun is a regulatory specification, not marketing, and it is worth understanding because the requirement is enforceable. OSHA restricts the use of compressed air for cleaning to a static pressure below 30 psi when the nozzle is dead-ended — that is, when the outlet is blocked, including by pressing it against skin. The hazard is air injection: shop air at line pressure driven through skin causes serious internal injury and, at the eye or an open wound, worse.

A safety air gun is engineered so that when the tip is blocked, relief ports bleed the pressure down below that threshold. It cannot dead-end at line pressure. An ordinary blow gun can.

That is why an operation cleaning with compressed air needs safety guns as a compliance matter, not a preference. Note that the pressure limit is one half of the requirement — effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment are the other half.

The volume control is the practical feature. Shop air at full flow is frequently far more than a job needs, and excess air blows chips and dust across a work area rather than off a part. Controlling volume at the gun means less noise, less consumption, and more control.
