The CRC03058 is a petroleum oil lubricant in a 16 oz aerosol with a 12 oz net fill, supplied 1 each with 12 per case. It is a black, semi-viscous liquid, classified flammable, with a flash point of 17.6 °F and a fast evaporation rate.

The combination of black colour, semi-viscous form, and a fast-evaporating carrier describes a specific product type: a chain and cable lubricant. The mechanics of the formulation are worth understanding, because they explain the application method. The solvent thins the lubricant enough to penetrate — into the gaps between a chain's pins, bushings, and rollers, or into the lay of a wire rope — carrying the heavy oil to the internal wear surfaces where the actual metal-to-metal contact occurs. The carrier then flashes off, leaving the viscous lubricant behind, inside the assembly rather than as a film on the outside collecting grit.

This is why surface-applied heavy oil fails on chain. The wear happens inside the joint, and a lubricant that cannot get in does nothing but attract abrasive.

The 17.6 °F flash point requires ignition sources to be eliminated from the work area.
