Multi-purpose is the operative designation. A single-purpose lubricant is formulated for one job and does it well; a multi-purpose product is built to cover the range of tasks a maintenance technician meets in a shift — freeing seized fasteners, lubricating hinges, linkages, chains, and slides, displacing moisture, and leaving a film that inhibits corrosion on bare metal. It is the can that lives on the cart rather than in the specialty cabinet.

The petroleum distillate base is what carries the lubricant into a joint. A thin carrier penetrates a tight clearance or a rusted thread, then flashes off and leaves the lubricating film behind where a heavier oil would simply sit on the outside of the problem.
