Century A.O. Smith 3PH 230-460 Motor H887L

The Century A.O. Smith H887L is a three-phase motor rated for 230 and 460 volt operation, supplied for fan, pump, and general industrial drive applications in commercial and industrial equipment.

Three-phase motors differ fundamentally from the single-phase motors used in residential HVAC. The three-phase supply produces a rotating magnetic field directly, so no start winding, run capacitor, start capacitor, or centrifugal switch is required. This removes the components that cause most single-phase motor failures and is a principal reason three-phase motors are preferred wherever the supply is available.

The dual voltage rating means the motor's windings can be connected for either 230 or 460 volt operation, with the configuration made at the terminal box according to the connection diagram on the nameplate. Connecting a dual-voltage motor for the wrong supply will destroy it immediately, so the configuration must be confirmed before energising.

Rotation on a three-phase motor is reversed simply by interchanging any two supply leads, which should be checked before the driven equipment is coupled.
