The 277 volt rating identifies this as a commercial motor. In a 480/277 volt three-phase four-wire distribution system, 277 volts is the line-to-neutral voltage, and equipment in commercial buildings frequently uses it for single-phase loads such as lighting and fan motors. Doing so avoids the transformer that would otherwise be needed to derive a lower voltage.

A 277 volt motor cannot be operated on a 208 or 240 volt supply, and a 208-230 volt motor will fail immediately on 277 volts.
