Description
The Ullman ULLHT3 is a telescoping magnetic pick-up tool, 10 lb load capacity, 8-1/4 inch to 30-1/4 inch, stainless steel handle, neodymium-iron-boron high flux magnet, with a pocket clip.
At 10 lb this is the strong version in this range, and the trade against the lighter ones is worth understanding rather than assuming stronger is better.
More magnet means a bigger magnet. A bigger magnet is a larger head, which is exactly what a pick-up tool frequently cannot afford — the whole job is getting down a gap that a hand cannot reach. A tool that will not fit through the opening has no capacity at all.
It also means the magnet grabs everything on the way past. Fishing a bolt out of an engine bay with a ten pound magnet means it sticks to the frame, the bracket, the manifold, and every steel surface between the hand and the target. The lighter tools are easier to steer.
And note the shorter reach here: 30-1/4 inches against 33-3/4 for the 5 lb version. More magnet is more weight on the end of a thin telescoping shaft, and the shaft is what limits it.
So capacity is chosen for the object, not for reassurance.
Neodymium magnets interfere with pacemakers and implanted defibrillators at close range. A pocket clip puts one well inside the published separation distances.
