Product Highlights
Description
The Robertshaw 710-511 is a millivolt gas valve for self powered standing pilot heating systems.
A characteristic worth understanding about millivolt systems is the distinction between the thermocouple and the thermopile, since both appear in standing pilot equipment and they are not interchangeable.
A thermocouple is a single junction producing roughly 25 to 30 millivolts. That is sufficient only to hold a magnetic safety valve open, and a thermocouple system therefore requires a separate means of controlling the main burner.
A thermopile, also called a pilot generator, is a series assembly of many junctions producing several hundred millivolts, typically in the region of 750 millivolts open circuit. That is enough to operate a gas valve directly through a thermostat, which is what makes a fully self powered system possible.
Fitting a thermocouple where a thermopile is required produces a system whose safety valve holds but whose main valve will never open, and the symptom, a pilot that stays lit while the burner never fires, is a recognisable signature.
Checking which device the appliance requires before ordering avoids a wasted visit.
Applications include millivolt unit heaters, wall heaters, fireplaces, pool heaters, and standing pilot appliances.
