Cold galvanizing is not silver paint, and understanding why is the entire sales argument. Ordinary paint protects steel by covering it — a barrier. Scratch the barrier and the steel under the scratch rusts, and the rust creeps under the surrounding paint.

A zinc-rich compound protects electrochemically. Zinc is more reactive than steel, so when the two are in contact and moisture is present, the zinc corrodes preferentially and the steel does not. That is cathodic protection — the same principle as a sacrificial anode — and it means a scratch through to bare steel is still protected by the zinc around it. The coating defends what it does not cover.

The application that drives sales is repair. Hot-dip galvanized steel arrives protected, and then someone welds it, cuts it, or drills it — and the heat burns the zinc off exactly where the metal is now most vulnerable. Cold galvanizing restores protection at that spot. Without it, every weld on a galvanized structure is a rust start.
