Narrow stretch wrap with a handle is a specific product for a specific job, and it is not a small version of pallet wrap. At 5 inches this is bundling film — wrapping table legs, gathering pipe or conduit, securing furniture blankets, holding drawers shut, banding awkward loads, and reinforcing corners. It goes around things a hand can reach around.

The handle is the whole ergonomic argument. Full-width pallet wrap is applied by walking around a pallet with a dispenser; a 5 inch roll is applied by hand, and a bare roll of film with no handle means gripping the film itself, which tears it and cuts fingers. The handle lets the roll spin while the operator pulls tension.

Tension is what makes stretch wrap work, and it is the part people get wrong. The film's holding power comes from being stretched as it is applied — the elastic recovery is what grips. Wrap it loose and it is just plastic wrapped around something; it will not hold and it will not tighten later.
