DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C340C

The DiversiTech C340C is a three pole definite purpose contactor rated 40 amps with a 208/240 volt coil.

Contactors are often replaced as a matter of course during compressor replacement, and there is sound reasoning behind the practice.

A failed compressor frequently takes its contactor with it, or is caused by it. A contactor with welded or high resistance contacts delivers unbalanced or reduced voltage to the compressor, which draws higher current, runs hot, and eventually fails. Fitting a new compressor behind the contactor that contributed to the failure is a reliable way to produce a repeat failure, and on a warranty replacement that repeat is expensive.

Conversely, a compressor that failed with a shorted winding will have drawn very high current through the contactor before the protection operated, and the contacts will have suffered for it even if they look serviceable.

Where a compressor is replaced, the contactor, capacitors, and any start components should be replaced with it, and the wiring and terminations inspected. The added cost is small relative to the labour of returning.

At 40 amps in three poles this contactor suits three phase compressor and motor loads in commercial air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
