DiversiTech Definite Purpose Contactor C230B

The DiversiTech C230B is a two pole definite purpose contactor rated 30 amps with a 120 volt coil.

Contactor coils fail in two distinct ways, and distinguishing them is useful diagnostically.

An open coil produces no action at all: the contactor does not pull in, and a resistance measurement across the coil terminals reads infinite. This is generally the result of age, overheating, or the coil having been supplied at a voltage above its rating.

A coil that pulls in but chatters, buzzes, or drops out under load is a different fault, and the coil is usually not the cause. Chattering indicates the coil is not receiving enough voltage to hold the armature firmly closed, which points to a weak transformer, a marginal control circuit, loose control connections, or in a 120 volt circuit a voltage drop under load. A persistent buzz with the contactor closed more often indicates dirt or corrosion on the mating pole faces, or a failed shading coil.

Replacing a contactor for chattering without finding the underlying supply problem produces a repeat call.

The 120 volt coil suits line voltage control circuits found in commercial refrigeration and packaged equipment.
