APEX GRW80672 Socket E22 1/2 Inch Alloy Steel Black Oxide External Torx

The GRW80672 is a socket with a 1/2 inch drive tang and external Torx drive, in fastener size E22, black oxide finish, alloy steel, 2 inch overall length, standard format, with hard stamped markings.

External Torx — designated E-series — is a fastener type that catches people out, and it is worth being precise about. The common Torx is internal: a star-shaped recess in the fastener head, driven by a star-shaped bit. External Torx is the inverse: the fastener head itself is a star-shaped lobe, and the socket has the star recess. The two are entirely different tools. An E22 socket has nothing to do with a T-whatever bit.

External Torx appears predominantly on automotive and heavy equipment work — engine, driveline, brake, and suspension fasteners — where its lobed geometry transmits high torque with far less risk of rounding than a hex of the same size.

The E22 size and 1/2 inch drive place this in the heavy end: large fasteners at real torque, which is exactly where a hex would round and a lobed drive will not.

Black oxide rather than chrome is correct here. Chrome plating can flake under the loads a 1/2 inch drive socket sees, and flakes in a driveline are a problem.

Hard stamped markings survive; printed ones wear off.
