Description
The GRW80448 is a bit socket with a 3/8 inch drive tang and ball hex drive, in a 10 mm fastener size, with a full polish chrome holder and black oxide bit. Construction is alloy steel, in the long format, with an exposed bit length of 4.922 inch and an overall length of 5.984 inch.
The exposed bit length figure is the specification that determines whether this tool reaches the fastener, and it is worth reading rather than skimming. At 4.922 inch, nearly five inches of bit stands proud of the holder. That is what lets the socket reach a fastener recessed deep inside a housing, a bore, or a counterbore — the situations where a standard-length bit socket bottoms out on the surrounding material before the bit touches the screw.
The ball hex end complements that reach. Deep, recessed fasteners are frequently also fasteners that cannot be approached squarely, and a ball end engages the hex at an angle. The trade is that a ball end contacts less surface than a full hex and transmits less torque before it slips — so break fasteners loose with a straight hex where possible and use the ball for angled running.
The two-finish construction is deliberate: chrome on the holder for corrosion resistance and cleaning, black oxide on the bit where a chrome plate would flake under load.
The 3/8 inch drive fits standard ratchets and extensions.
