Yellow Jacket Manifold & Hoses 2V 42005

The Yellow Jacket 42005 is a two valve manifold with hoses for refrigeration and air conditioning service.

The manifold's sight glass, where fitted, is a feature worth understanding because it is frequently misread.

A sight glass in the manifold body allows refrigerant flowing through the manifold to be observed during charging. Its purpose is to show whether liquid or vapour is passing, which is useful when charging liquid through a metering arrangement.

It is not the same as the sight glass in a system's liquid line, and it does not indicate charge level. A system sight glass showing bubbles may indicate undercharge, or a restriction, or simply flashing due to pressure drop, and reading charge from it is unreliable in any case. A manifold sight glass shows only what is passing through the manifold at that moment.

Confusing the two leads to charging decisions based on an observation that means something different from what was assumed.

Charge should be determined by weight where the correct quantity is known, and by superheat or subcooling as appropriate to the metering device where it is not.
