Yellow Jacket Blue Compound Manifold Gauge 49138

The Yellow Jacket 49138 is a blue compound manifold gauge for low side service.

The low side gauge is the one most often damaged, and the mechanism is worth stating so it can be avoided.

Damage occurs when the low side gauge is exposed to high side pressure. The routes are a manifold valve left open when it should be closed, hoses connected to the wrong ports, or the high side valve opened while the centre port is connected to the low side.

A gauge driven well beyond its scale suffers permanent damage to its Bourdon tube, after which it will not return to zero and its readings across the whole scale are suspect.

The habit that prevents it is keeping manifold valves closed except when flow is deliberately required, and confirming hose connections before opening anything.

A gauge that no longer zeros should be replaced rather than mentally compensated for, since the error is not necessarily constant across the scale and a gauge reading a few pounds off leads directly to incorrect charge assessment.
