A practical point about working with a full manifold set concerns the sequence of connection and disconnection.

Connections should be made with the manifold valves closed, so that refrigerant does not flow between hoses or escape as connections are completed. Once connected, the hoses contain air, and that air should be purged before readings are taken or refrigerant is added, since introducing air into a system defeats the evacuation that preceded it.

At disconnection, the sequence matters again. Refrigerant in the hoses should be recovered or retained by low loss fittings rather than vented, and the high side should be handled with the awareness that it contains liquid at pressure.
