Yellow Jacket Gauge Low Side R22 49106

The Yellow Jacket 49106 is a low side gauge scaled for R-22 service.

Refrigerant specific gauge scales carry temperature markings alongside the pressure scale, allowing pressure to be read directly as saturation temperature for the marked refrigerant.

That conversion is what makes a pressure reading diagnostically useful. Pressure alone indicates little; the saturation temperature it represents, compared against measured line temperatures, gives superheat and subcooling, which are the figures that actually describe how the system is operating.

The limitation is that the markings apply only to the refrigerants printed. Reading an R-410A system on an R-22 scaled gauge gives a saturation temperature that is simply wrong, and the resulting diagnosis follows from a false premise.

For that reason, gauges must be matched to the refrigerant, or a separate pressure-temperature reference used. Digital manifolds resolve this by allowing the refrigerant to be selected and computing accordingly.

With R-22 systems still in service though no longer manufactured, gauges scaled for it remain necessary for maintenance work on existing equipment.

Applications include R-22 refrigeration and air conditioning diagnosis and service.
