The System Sensor DST5 is a 5 foot sampling tube for duct smoke detectors, spanning wide ductwork to collect a representative air sample.

At five feet this tube suits the larger rectangular ducts found on commercial air handlers and rooftop units serving substantial floor areas.

Long sampling tubes introduce a mechanical consideration that shorter ones do not. A five foot tube cantilevered into a duct from one wall is subject to the force of the airstream across its length, and in a duct carrying high velocity air it can vibrate or deflect. Manufacturers generally require the far end to be supported, and the tube's end cap fitted, both to prevent this movement and to ensure the pressure differential develops correctly.

Vibration matters beyond the mechanical risk: a tube resonating in an airstream transmits noise into the duct system, which in an occupied building is a complaint.

The tube must be installed with its sampling holes facing into the airflow, in a straight duct section with adequate distance from bends and takeoffs, and it must span substantially the full duct width.
