Hart & Cooley Ceiling Diffuser T-BAR Rigid Universal Insulated Back

The Hart & Cooley 10147 is a rigid universal insulated back pan for T-bar lay-in ceiling diffusers, fitting a nominal 24 by 24 inch grid module.

A back pan closes off the rear of a lay-in diffuser and provides the connection to the flexible or rigid duct serving it. Without one, supply air discharges into the ceiling plenum rather than through the diffuser face, and in a ducted return or a fire rated assembly the arrangement is not permissible at all.

Insulation on the back pan addresses condensation. In a cooling application, the pan carries air well below the dew point of the air in the ceiling plenum above, and an uninsulated metal pan will condense moisture on its exterior. That condensate drips onto ceiling tiles, producing the stained tiles frequently found beneath diffusers in humid climates. Insulation also attenuates duct borne noise reaching the space.

Rigid construction holds the pan's shape during installation and over time, which matters because a distorted pan leaks air at the diffuser interface and around the duct collar.

The universal designation indicates fitment across a range of diffuser faces on the standard 24 by 24 inch module, which simplifies stocking on projects using several diffuser styles.
