The Genteq 6510VUI is a 1 horsepower variable speed blower motor with a four pin connection.

Electronically commutated motors differ fundamentally from the permanent split capacitor motors they replace. An ECM contains a permanent magnet rotor and electronic control that commutates the windings, and it can vary its speed continuously rather than running at fixed speeds set by winding taps.

Two benefits follow. Efficiency is substantially higher, particularly at reduced speed, because there are no rotor losses of the kind an induction motor suffers. And the motor can maintain airflow against varying static pressure, compensating for a loading filter or a partially closed damper by increasing speed.

That compensation is a double edged characteristic. An ECM will maintain airflow through a duct system that is genuinely restricted, masking the problem until the motor reaches its limit, at which point the system fails apparently suddenly. A PSC motor simply delivers less air and the problem is apparent earlier.

Measuring static pressure on ECM equipped systems is therefore more important, not less.
