The DeWalt DEWDW840 is a 7 inch medium angle grinder rated at 8,000 rpm, priced and sold per each.
The relationship between wheel size and rated speed is the specification worth understanding here, because it is a safety matter rather than a performance one. A grinder's rated speed must be matched to the wheel's — and larger wheels carry lower maximum speeds, because surface speed at the rim rises with diameter. At 8,000 rpm a 7 inch wheel is already moving very fast at its edge; running a 7 inch wheel at a 4-1/2 inch grinder's 11,000 rpm would take it past its rated surface speed, and abrasive wheels fail by disintegrating. This is why grinders are speed-matched to their wheel size rather than simply being made as fast as possible.
The 7 inch wheel size is the working reason to reach for this tool over a small grinder: more wheel means more coverage per pass and more material removed, which is the difference between dressing a weld and actually stripping a surface or cutting through section.
A grinder of this size carries real torque and requires the side handle to be fitted and used. Kickback on a 7 inch tool is not a small event.
Applications include weld dressing, heavy grinding, surface preparation, cutting, and fabrication across structural steel, shipyards, foundries, and heavy maintenance.
