The Copeland ZPS83KCE-TFD-800 is a welded hermetic scroll compressor for air conditioning service, configured for three phase operation on a nominal 460 volt supply.

Scroll compressors tolerate a small quantity of liquid refrigerant returning in the suction line better than reciprocating compressors do, because the scroll elements can separate slightly and allow liquid to pass rather than attempting to compress it in a fixed clearance cylinder. This is a genuine advantage, and it is frequently overstated.

Tolerance is not immunity. Sustained liquid return still dilutes the oil, and diluted oil does not maintain the film the bearings and scroll surfaces depend on. The failure that follows is a bearing or scroll wear failure some months later, and its cause is rarely traced back to the flooding that produced it.

The conditions that cause liquid return are worth checking at every commissioning. An overcharged system, a metering device that is oversized or has failed open, low evaporator airflow from a dirty filter or coil, and refrigerant migration to the compressor during off cycles all produce it.

Measuring suction superheat confirms whether refrigerant is fully evaporated before it reaches the compressor. Where migration during off cycles is the concern, a crankcase heater keeps the oil warm enough to drive refrigerant out.

Confirm capacity, voltage, phase, refrigerant, connection sizes, and bill of material before ordering, and verify phase rotation at start.
