Copeland Compressor A/C Reciprocating CR47KQE-TF5-970

The Copeland CR47KQE-TF5-970 is a three phase hermetic reciprocating air conditioning compressor supplied with polyol ester lubricant, operating on a nominal 200 to 230 volt supply.

Reciprocating compressors compress refrigerant with pistons driven by a crankshaft, drawing vapour in through suction valves and discharging it through discharge valves in a valve plate assembly. The design predates scroll technology and remains in service across a large installed base, valued for its tolerance of a wide range of operating conditions.

The valve plate is where reciprocating compressors most often show their age. Suction and discharge valves are thin steel reeds flexing on every revolution, and they eventually fatigue, distort, or fracture. A leaking discharge valve allows compressed vapour back into the cylinder on the intake stroke, and the compressor then runs, draws current, and produces heat while delivering reduced capacity.

The diagnostic signature is characteristic. Discharge pressure lower than expected, suction pressure higher than expected, a compressor that runs continuously without satisfying the space, and a discharge line that is hot without the capacity to match.

This pattern is easily mistaken for a refrigerant charge problem, and adding refrigerant to a compressor with failed valves makes matters worse.
