Uniweld Vaporvue Charging Device VV1

The Uniweld VV1 Vaporvue is a charging device for controlled refrigerant introduction.

Metering refrigerant into a system during charging addresses a specific hazard: liquid refrigerant reaching the compressor.

A compressor is designed to pump vapour. Liquid entering the suction port cannot be compressed, and the result is slugging, which can break valves, bend connecting rods, and in severe cases destroy the compressor immediately.

Because blended refrigerants must be charged as liquid to avoid fractionation, and because charging into the low side of an operating system is often the practical approach, a means of flashing that liquid to vapour before it reaches the compressor is required. A charging device or metering valve performs that function, restricting the flow so the liquid vaporises in the hose.

The alternatives are to charge liquid into the high side with the system off, which works but requires the system to be shut down, or to charge slowly enough that the liquid vaporises naturally, which is unreliable.

Applications include refrigeration and air conditioning charging, particularly with blended refrigerants requiring liquid charging.
