Product Highlights
Description
The Uniweld G56D is an oxygen contents gauge for indicating cylinder pressure on oxy fuel regulators.
The contents gauge tells the operator how much gas remains, and for oxygen that reading is directly proportional to the quantity in the cylinder.
Oxygen is stored as a compressed gas, so pressure falls steadily as gas is drawn. A cylinder at half its full pressure holds approximately half its capacity, and the gauge gives a usable indication of remaining supply throughout.
Acetylene behaves differently, and the contrast is worth knowing. Acetylene is dissolved in acetone within the cylinder rather than stored as a compressed gas, so its pressure does not fall proportionally with contents. Judging remaining acetylene from pressure alone is unreliable, and weighing the cylinder is the accurate method.
Knowing the remaining supply matters practically. Running out of oxygen partway through a brazing sequence leaves a joint incomplete and partly heated, and the joint generally has to be cut out and remade.
Checking cylinder contents before starting a job, rather than discovering the problem partway through, is the straightforward control.
Cylinders should never be run completely empty, since a small positive pressure prevents contamination entering the cylinder.
Confirm the gauge is designated for oxygen service and that its range and connection match the regulator. Open oxygen cylinder valves slowly, and keep all oxygen equipment free of oil and grease.
