The Schumacher SHESC1355 is an automatic 6V and 12V 1.5A automotive battery charger and maintainer.

The word that matters is maintainer, and it describes a different job from charging.

Lead-acid batteries fail by sulfation. Left partially discharged, lead sulphate crystals form on the plates and harden, and hardened sulphate does not convert back. The battery loses capacity permanently. This happens to any battery sitting unused — a classic car, a boat, a tractor, a standby generator, a seasonal machine — and it is the reason batteries die over a winter without anybody using them.

A maintainer prevents it. It monitors the battery and holds it at full charge, delivering only what self-discharge takes away. That is what keeps a stored battery alive for years instead of one season.

The distinction from a charger is critical: an old-fashioned charger left connected overheats a full battery, boils off electrolyte, and destroys it. A maintainer is designed to stay connected indefinitely.

At 1.5 amps this is a maintainer rather than a fast charger. It will not rescue a flat battery quickly, and that is not what it is for.

The 6V capability covers older vehicles, tractors, and motorcycles that a 12V-only unit cannot serve.

Applications include stored vehicles, seasonal equipment, and standby batteries.
