The Oatey OAT15806 is a Hercules Megaloc pipe sealant, 8 fl oz screw cap can with brush, a Kevlar thread sealant that wipes easily from hands and tools with a dry rag, also known as pipe dope.

The Kevlar content is the specification and it does something a plain paste sealant does not.

A pipe thread sealant has to fill the helical gap between male and female threads and stay there under pressure and vibration. A plain paste can be extruded out of the gap by pressure over time — which is how a joint that sealed on day one weeps on day four hundred. Aramid fibre in the paste reinforces it, resisting that extrusion.

The case against PTFE tape is the reason this whole category exists. Tape shreds while being wrapped, and the fragments travel downstream into valve seats, orifices, and control components, causing faults that take a day to trace. A paste has nothing to shred. Tape is also slippery enough that over-tightening is easy, and over-tightening a tapered thread splits the female fitting.

The clean-up note is not filler. Traditional pipe dopes are difficult to remove from hands and tools, which is a real reason plumbers reach for tape instead. A dope that wipes off with a dry rag gets used.

The brush in the cap applies it to the thread rather than everywhere.
