Matching the plenum cross section to the equipment outlet is more important than it is often treated. The blower discharges into the plenum at high velocity, and an abrupt change in cross section at that point creates turbulence, which raises static pressure, generates noise, and produces uneven distribution into the trunk takeoffs. A plenum significantly larger than the outlet does not simply reduce velocity; it creates a sudden expansion with its own losses. Where a transition is required, it should be gradual.
