The MasterSeal MBSNP1ALGRY12 is a MasterSeal NP1 polyurethane sealant, 10.1 oz, grey.

NP1 is one of the most widely specified construction joint sealants in North America, and the reason is the material class. Polyurethane occupies a position that neither silicone nor acrylic can.

The distinction that decides most purchases: polyurethane is paintable and silicone is not. Nothing adheres to cured silicone — that is what makes it a good sealant and what makes it impossible to finish over. On a building where the joint has to disappear into the wall, silicone is the wrong product regardless of how well it seals. Polyurethane takes paint.

Polyurethane is also abrasion resistant and tough in a way silicone is not, which is why it goes in horizontal joints, traffic areas, and places where the sealant gets walked on and knocked.

What polyurethane gives up is the extreme temperature range and the ultraviolet stability of silicone.

Joint design determines whether any sealant works. A sealant must bond to two faces and be free to stretch between them, which is why backer rod exists — a sealant bonded to the back of the joint as well as the sides cannot move and tears itself apart.

The 10.1 oz cartridge is the standard gun size.
