Description
The Mars M92370 is a single pole double throw relay with a 24 volt coil.
Relay coils are inductive, and that has a consequence worth understanding: when the coil is de-energised, the collapsing magnetic field produces a voltage spike across the coil, which appears in the circuit that was switching it.
On a circuit switched by another relay's mechanical contacts, this spike causes arcing at those contacts and shortens their life, but it is otherwise tolerable.
On a circuit switched by a solid state output, which describes most modern control boards, the spike can damage the switching device. This is one reason control boards fail, and it is why boards driving inductive loads generally incorporate suppression.
Where a relay is being added to a control scheme driven by an electronic board, considering whether the board's output is rated for an inductive load is worthwhile. Some boards specify a maximum coil VA for exactly this reason.
Suppression components fitted across a coil, where the application warrants them, absorb the spike and protect the switching device.
Applications include residential and commercial HVAC and refrigeration control circuits.
