Product Highlights
Description
The Lucas-Milhaupt 95150 Sil-Fos is a 15 percent silver copper phosphorus brazing alloy.
Fifteen percent silver represents the high end of the copper phosphorus range, and it is specified where joint performance justifies the cost.
The properties that justify it are a lower melting range, greater ductility, and better flow into imperfect joints.
The situations that call for it are specific. Joints on equipment subject to severe vibration, where a brittle deposit would crack. Joints where minimising heat input matters, whether because of thin wall tubing or heat sensitive components nearby. Joints where fit up cannot be controlled well, as in field repairs on existing pipework. And critical joints on equipment where failure would be expensive or difficult to access.
For routine work on well fitted joints in accessible locations, a lower silver alloy performs adequately at considerably lower cost, and using a 15 percent alloy throughout is an expensive habit rather than a quality measure.
The value is in matching the alloy to the demand.
The prohibition on ferrous metals applies regardless of silver content, since it derives from the phosphorus rather than the silver.
Confirm the alloy suits the metals being joined and the joint conditions, purge with nitrogen during brazing to prevent internal oxide scale, clean both mating surfaces to bright metal immediately before assembly, and control joint clearance for capillary action.
