The Justrite JUS7150100 is a Type I steel safety can for flammables, 5 gallon, with a stainless steel flame arrester and self-closing lid, in red.

Every element of this specification is a fire control, and they are worth taking one at a time.

Type I means a single opening — the can is filled and poured through the same spout. Type II cans have a separate fill opening and a flexible hose spout for controlled pouring into engines and small openings. Type I is simpler and suits general storage and transfer; the choice depends on what you are pouring into.

The flame arrester is the component that matters most and it is the least understood. It is a fine mesh screen in the spout. If a flame reaches the opening, the mesh conducts heat away from it faster than the flame can propagate through — so the flame goes out at the screen instead of reaching the vapour inside. That is what stops a can becoming a bomb. Never remove it, and never use a can with a damaged one.

The self-closing lid does two jobs: it closes automatically so the can is never left open, and it vents at low pressure so the can relieves rather than ruptures in a fire.

Red is the convention for gasoline and flammables.
