The ICM Controls UMSRE50 is a universal motor start relay and hard start kit for single phase hermetic compressors, providing starting assistance across a range of compressor sizes.

Universal hard start kits use a solid state or adaptive relay arrangement rather than the fixed potential relay found in dedicated kits. The advantage is coverage. A single part number serves a range of compressor capacities, which reduces the number of items a service vehicle must carry and increases the chance that a starting complaint can be resolved on the first visit.

The trade off is that universal devices are selected to suit a range rather than optimised for one compressor. Where a specific kit matched to the compressor is available and the fault is understood, the dedicated part remains the better long term fit.
