Product Highlights
Description
The General Tools 119 is a PVC pipe cutter with capacity up to 1-5/8 inches, used for cutting plastic pipe cleanly.
A ratcheting plastic pipe cutter shears the pipe with a blade rather than removing material, which gives several advantages over sawing.
The cut is square, which matters because a solvent welded joint depends on the pipe entering the fitting socket evenly and seating fully. A cut made at an angle leaves the pipe bearing unevenly in the socket, which produces a joint with an inconsistent bond line.
No swarf is produced. A saw generates plastic chips that fall into the pipe, and those chips travel to wherever the system takes them, which on a condensate drain means the trap or the termination.
The cut is also quicker and quieter, which matters in occupied buildings.
The limitation is that shearing can deform the pipe slightly at the cut, particularly on larger sizes or with a dull blade, and a deformed end may need dressing before assembly. A sharp blade largely avoids this.
Blades dull with use and should be replaced rather than persevered with, since a dull blade requires far more force and produces a poorer cut.
Confirm the cutter's capacity covers the pipe sizes handled. Deburr the cut end before assembly, and follow the solvent cement manufacturer's preparation and cure requirements.
