The Duro Dyne 14187 is a 1000 piece box of number 8 by 3/4 inch self drilling screws, supplied for sheet metal and ductwork assembly.

Self drilling and self tapping screws are frequently confused, and the distinction is practical.

A self tapping screw forms its own thread in a hole that has already been drilled. It cuts or rolls the thread as it is driven, but it does not make the hole.

A self drilling screw has a drill point formed on its tip. It drills the hole, then taps the thread, then draws the joint tight, all in one operation with no pilot hole required. Self drilling screws are frequently called Tek screws after an early trade name.

The saving in sheet metal work is substantial. Assembling ductwork with pilot holes would mean drilling, changing tools, and driving for every fastener, and a duct run uses a great many fasteners.

The limitation is material thickness. The drill point must complete the hole before the threads engage, and the point has a limited drilling capacity determined by its size. Driven into material thicker than its capacity, the threads engage before the point breaks through, and the screw stalls or snaps.

Confirm the screw gauge, length, point capacity, and finish suit the material and environment. Use a driver with adequate torque and appropriate speed.
