DiversiTech Pipe Cement Rain-R-Shine 8OZ 530-30891

The DiversiTech 530-30891 is an eight ounce container of Rain-R-Shine PVC pipe cement, a solvent cement for joining rigid PVC pipe and fittings.

Solvent cement does not glue PVC in the ordinary sense. It chemically softens the surfaces of both the pipe and the fitting socket so that the two materials fuse, and the joint that results is a continuous piece of PVC rather than two pieces bonded together. This is why a correctly made solvent weld is as strong as the pipe itself.

The process depends on the surfaces being properly prepared and on the joint being assembled while the solvent is still active. Cutting square, deburring, and applying primer where required all matter, and the assembly must be made promptly and held briefly so the joint does not push apart before it sets.

The most common error is applying too little cement to the fitting socket, or allowing the applied cement to dry before assembly. Both produce a joint that appears complete but has voids in the bond line, and those voids leak under pressure.

Cure time before pressurising varies with pipe size, temperature, and humidity, and the manufacturer's schedule should be followed rather than estimated.

Ventilation is required, since solvent cements release flammable vapours. Keep containers closed when not in use, as the solvent evaporates and the cement thickens.
