The Builder's Best 111015 is an 8 inch wall vent in brown with a mini louver profile, for exterior termination of exhaust ductwork.

Colour matters on exterior terminations more than on most mechanical components, because the vent is a visible element on a finished elevation. A brown termination suits brown or bronze siding, trim, and window frames, where a white unit would read as a conspicuous bright spot on the wall.

Selecting the finish at purchase is preferable to painting afterwards. Paint applied to a termination in place inevitably reaches the louvers and the damper, and a damper with paint in its hinge or on its seating face will not close reliably. A damper stuck open leaves a continuous opening between the building and outdoors, admitting wind driven air, insects, and in cold climates enough cold air to cause condensation inside the duct.

Where an existing termination must be repainted to match new siding, removing it and finishing it off the wall, with the damper masked or removed, avoids the problem.

The damper's condition should be checked periodically in any case, since lint accumulation produces the same failure.

Applications include residential and light commercial exterior wall exhaust terminations for bathroom, laundry, and general ventilation, particularly on elevations with brown or bronze finishes.
