The GRW82812 is a tap and die set, 114 pieces, supplied in a blow mold case measuring 21.5 inch long by 13.5 inch wide by 3.5 inch high.
Taps and dies exist to solve two problems that come up constantly and have no other answer. A tap cuts an internal thread — creating a threaded hole where there was a plain one, or, far more often, chasing and repairing a damaged thread so a fastener will run in again. A die cuts an external thread on a rod, or cleans up a bolt whose threads have been mangled.
That repair function is what earns a set like this its place in a shop. A cross-threaded or corroded hole in an expensive casting is a serious problem: the alternatives are drilling out and inserting, or scrapping the part. A tap chases the thread back to usable in a few minutes.
A 114 piece set is broad coverage, which is what makes it useful for repair work rather than production. Repair does not let you choose the thread — the part decides, and the set either has that size or it does not.
The blow mold case is functional. Taps are brittle and easily chipped, and a tap rattling loose in a drawer is a tap that will break in a hole.
Applications include machinery maintenance, automotive and fleet service, fabrication, and general repair.
Use cutting fluid and back the tap off regularly to clear chips — taps break when chips pack.
